The courier service you didn't know you were running
Tally a normal week's file movement in a shop:
- A scan-suite update needs to reach the diagnostic station — someone downloads it at the front desk, finds a USB stick, walks it over.
- A diagnostic log needs a second opinion — screenshot, text it, "can't read that, email it," email it.
- The end-of-day export lives on the office PC — and you are not at the office.
- A customer needs an invoice re-sent at 7 PM — the PDF is on the shop machine.
- A tool vendor sends a configuration file — which must land on the one laptop that talks to that tool.
None of these are hard. All of them cost minutes, and the after-hours ones cost either a drive or a "tomorrow." The pattern is invisible because each instance is small; the aggregate is a part-time job.
The two primitives that retire it
Two-way transfer inside the session. While connected to a station, files drag in both directions — your machine to the station (installers, calibrations, price sheets) and the station to you (logs, exports, PDFs). No third-party hop, no personal-email residue, no stick.
Remote file browsing. The quicker sibling: browse the station's folders directly and take the file without driving a full desktop over video. The "I just need yesterday's export" case — which is most retrieval — becomes a thirty-second fetch from a browser tab. Paired with the browser-side architecture, the whole errand happens from whatever machine you're near.
Why the session is the right channel — the accountability argument
Files were always going to move; the question is through what. The ad-hoc channels — personal email, chat apps, consumer cloud links, sticks — share two flaws: they scatter copies of shop data across surfaces you don't control, and they leave no coherent answer to what moved and who moved it.
Transfer inside the remote session inherits the session's whole security posture instead:

For machines this matters doubly: the station files worth moving — calibrations, tool configs, exported customer data — are exactly the files whose movement you may one day need to reconstruct. "It went through the recorded session on Tuesday, moved by Marcus" is an answer; "someone probably emailed it" is not.
Workflows this unlocks, concretely
- Station maintenance from home. Installer transferred in, run under Admin Mode (UAC handled, reboot survivable), station ready before morning — the full unattended-access pattern with logistics included.
- The second opinion with real data. Instead of a phone-photo of a screen, pull the actual log or export off the station and look at it properly — the home-office diagnostics workflow fed with real files.
- Multi-store consistency. The updated price sheet or config lands on every location's machine in one evening from one chair — a small but daily piece of the multi-location pattern.
- The 7 PM invoice. Browse, grab, send, done — no drive, and no forwarding shop documents through a personal inbox.
Honest edges
Where in-session transfer is the wrong hammer: bulk and continuous movement. Multi-gigabyte imaging jobs, whole-folder continuous sync, off-site backup — purpose-built sync and backup tools exist for those and should keep the job. The session covers the targeted movement — this file, there, now — which is the overwhelming majority of shop traffic. Tool-specific proprietary update channels (scan suites that fetch their own updates) also stay as they are; transfer complements them for everything they don't cover.
